Yes, the CDC Did Perpetuate an Overt Falsehood to Get You to Take the Shots
While recent attention has been brought to the memory-holing of claims made about the mRNA platform, a vastly more brazen falsehood was peddled by the CDC about the viral vector vaccines (e.g. J&J)
TL;DR
The CDC falsely assured the American public that the adenoviral vector vaccines (domestically, Johnson & Johnson) did not insert genetic material into cellular nuclei during the eight month period during which the majority of recipients were given the shots. This was known to be false the entire time, and in fact, is the obligate mechanism of the drug.
A couple of great Substack articles came out recently on the CDC finally removing the false claim that the PEGylated pseudouridine-modified mRNA in the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines and their resultant spike proteins were short-lived in the body. From the beginning of the vaccination campaign, this assurance of transience was provided to the American public largely by blustery fiat.
“Our cells break down mRNA from these vaccines and get rid of it within a few days after vaccination… Scientists estimate that the spike protein, like other proteins our bodies create, may stay in the body up to a few weeks.”
“…never mind…” (paraphrasing)
The problem, of course, with providing assurances in lieu of any good data is that they can turn out wrong. Sometimes very wrong. It’s clear the agency tried to avoid the embarrassment of the reversal by admitting nothing; the date of last update (“July 15”) remains unchanged.
At some point, such a change likely became unavoidable, as evidence of the unnatural persistence of these biological products continues to accrue (e.g. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0092867422000769, https://www.jimmunol.org/content/207/10/2405.long, https://www.mdpi.com/2227-9059/10/7/1538).1
Update 9/1/2023: newest study affirms at least half a year in some patients (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/prca.202300048)
But as bad as it is to assure the American public of something before doing the studies first (such as informing everyone an exceedingly novel drug mechanism is “safe” without any long-term human testing), far worse is stating something that is incontestably known to be false at the time.
The mRNA (Pfizer and Moderna) vaccines have received the lion’s share of the attention during the COVID era, in large part because those are the vaccines the majority of Americans received.
However, roughly 17 million people received Johnson & Johnson shots. These shots, along with the AstraZeneca vaccines used abroad, were adenoviral vectors (https://www.drugdiscoverytrends.com/a-quick-history-of-the-tech-behind-jj-astrazenecas-covid-19-vaccines/). Some recipients in the US mistakenly believed that these were “traditional” vaccines, in contrast with the mRNA platform, in part due to messaging that exaggerated their previous marketability, which, prior to a couple of truncated authorizations in the COVID era (for COVID and Ebola), consisted solely of a rabies vaccine which was air dropped in bait traps for consumption by wild animals (https://cen.acs.org/pharmaceuticals/vaccines/Adenoviral-vectors-new-COVID-19/98/i19).2
Mechanistically, the assumption that the Ad vaccines (Johnson & Johnson and Oxford/AstraZeneca) were a traditional alternative could not have been farther from the truth.
Succinctly, these viral vector vaccines are the direct product of genetic engineering. (As the Alliance for Science put it bluntly in the title of their December 2020 article “Yes, some COVID vaccines use genetic engineering. Get over it.” https://allianceforscience.cornell.edu/blog/2020/12/yes-some-covid-vaccines-use-genetic-engineering-get-over-it/) They are not the product of the mere weakening or disabling of a virus, nor are they simple protein subunits, for example. They are in some sense similar to the mRNA vaccines in that they are designed to deliver a fragment of genetic code to the cell’s machinery, but instead of using a lipid nanoparticle as the delivery package, they use another virus, and the new genetic code is effectively spliced in. Furthermore, instead of being designed to deliver this genetic code to the cell’s cytoplasm, these vaccines take a page out of their adenoviral carrying mechanism’s playbook and deliver DNA (specifically, spike protein DNA from the SARS-CoV-2 sequence) directly to the nucleus of the cell.
Some readers may balk at this. After all, wasn’t that precisely what we were told these vaccines don’t do?
Yes. And no. The CDC did indeed inform the public that this didn’t happen, until they switched to no longer recommending Johnson & Johnson relative to the Pfizer and Moderna shots. Then they started telling the truth (at which point it no longer mattered). But before we get to that, let’s establish that the mechanism described above is, and always was, well-known to be the case.
PBS NewsHour:
“Once injected, the vaccine delivers this modified DNA into the nucleus of immune cells and nearby muscle cells”
JAMA:
https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2777172
American Society for Microbiology:
“Like Moderna and Pfizer, J&J targets the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. DNA encoding the S gene is added to Ad26. Vaccination introduces the resultant, specialized viral vectors to host cells. Once engulfed, the adenovirus pushes its DNA into the nucleus of the host cell”
https://asm.org/Articles/2020/December/COVID-19-Vaccine-FAQs
New York Times:
"After the vaccine is injected into a person’s arm, the adenoviruses bump into cells and latch onto proteins on their surface. The cell engulfs the virus in a bubble and pulls it inside. Once inside, the adenovirus escapes from the bubble and travels to the nucleus, the chamber where the cell’s DNA is stored.
The adenovirus pushes its DNA into the nucleus. The adenovirus is engineered so it can’t make copies of itself, but the gene for the coronavirus spike protein can be read by the cell and copied into a molecule called messenger RNA, or mRNA.”
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/health/johnson-johnson-covid-19-vaccine.html
GAVI (acronymic for “Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization”):
“Once injected into the body, these vaccine viruses begin infecting our cells and inserting their genetic material – including the antigen gene – into the cells’ nuclei. Human cells manufacture the antigen as if it were one of their own proteins and this is presented on their surface alongside many other proteins. When the immune cells detect the foreign antigen, they mount an immune response against it.”
https://www.gavi.org/vaccineswork/what-are-viral-vector-based-vaccines-and-how-could-they-be-used-against-covid-19 3
CHOP:
“Unlike the mRNA vaccines, adenovirus vaccines deliver instructions by DNA. This difference means that when the DNA-based adenovirus vector is delivered to a cell, the DNA makes its way into the nucleus, where it serves as a blueprint to produce mRNA that is released into the cytoplasm. The mRNA is then used to guide production of coronavirus spike protein, which is ultimately processed by immune system cells to generate immunity.”
CHOP also has a great visual presentation as well:
"The virus vector can’t cause disease, but instead delivers its specially engineered genetic material into the nucleus”
https://www.chop.edu/video/how-covid-19-viral-vector-vaccines-work
By comparison, let’s review what was said on the topic by the CDC, the national public health agency of the United States of America:
On their page entitled “Understanding and Explaining Viral Vector COVID-19 Vaccines” on its first wayback machine capture on February 2, 2021, the CDC stated:
http://web.archive.org/web/20210202160930/https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/hcp/viral-vector-vaccine-basics.html
“The genetic material delivered by the viral vector does not enter the cell nucleus and does not integrate into a person’s DNA.”
This error was caught by a commenter on Derek Lowe’s “In the Pipeline” blog on drug discovery and the pharmaceutical industry, hosted by Science.org. (https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/how-you-make-adenovirus-vaccine)
The commenter observed that the CDC’s proclamation against nuclear penetration contradicted GAVI (linked earlier) as well as information from the Federation of the European Biochemical Societies (https://febs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/1873-3468.13695).
He reportedly contacted the CDC and got them to change it. Sure enough, the web archive reveals that sometime between February 16 (http://web.archive.org/web/20210216150141/https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/hcp/viral-vector-vaccine-basics.html) and February 24 (http://web.archive.org/web/20210224132338/https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/hcp/viral-vector-vaccine-basics.html), the falsehood was removed. Nuclear penetration was not admitted, but at least its patently false denial was no longer presented as one of the “Key Points to Share with Your Patients”.
A fellow commenter going by “Marko” said “Nice work ! My faith in the CDC is being restored, if only gradually.”
“If only” indeed, Marko.
For historical context, it is of note that J&J was paused on Tuesday, April 13 for causing blood clots in patients. (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/13/us/politics/johnson-johnson-vaccine-blood-clots-fda-cdc.html)
This pause was lifted on April 26. (https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-and-cdc-lift-recommended-pause-johnson-johnson-janssen-covid-19-vaccine-use-following-thorough)
During the interim, on a newly constructed CDC page entitled “Myths and Facts about COVID-19 Vaccines”, first appearing on the web archive on April 15, 2021, the CDC then promoted the exact same overt falsehood again. Worse still, this page was the page directed at the public for the express purpose of dispelling myths about the COVID-19 vaccines, and it was perpetuating a myth known to be false by the mechanism of the drug design itself.
April 15, 2021: http://web.archive.org/web/20210415230513/https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/facts.html
"There are currently two types of COVID-19 vaccines that have been authorized and recommended for use in the United States: messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines and a viral vector vaccine. Both mRNA and viral vector COVID-19 vaccines deliver instructions (genetic material) to our cells to start building protection against the virus that causes COVID-19. However, the material never enters the nucleus of the cell, which is where our DNA is kept. This means the genetic material in the vaccines cannot affect or interact with our DNA in any way. All COVID-19 vaccines work with the body’s natural defenses to safely develop immunity to disease.”
Again, that’s “Both mRNA and viral vector COVID-19 vaccines deliver instructions (genetic material) to our cells to start building protection against the virus that causes COVID-19. However, the material never enters the nucleus of the cell, which is where our DNA is kept.”
The absurdity of making the same erroneous statement (which should never have been made because it was contrary not merely to empirical data but to the requisite drug mechanism), after being corrected, on the page dedicated to combatting myths is, if negligence, the most malfeasant negligence imaginable. The fact that foreign genetic material would necessarily enter the nuclei of patients’ cells would almost certainly have factored into the decisions of countless Americans4, many of whom only took the shot because of assurances to the contrary. Instead of that truth, they were repeatedly told nothing would enter the nucleus, and to get whatever shot was first available to them.
The entry was shortened on July 8th, but the falsehood was maintained: http://web.archive.org/web/20210708213602/https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/facts.html
"COVID-19 vaccines do not change or interact with your DNA in any way. Both mRNA and viral vector COVID-19 vaccines deliver instructions (genetic material) to our cells to start building protection against the virus that causes COVID-19. However, the material never enters the nucleus of the cell, which is where our DNA is kept.”
Not until sometime between December 15 and 16, 2021 was it ever removed. The last archive perpetuating the falsehood was the web archive’s last capture on December 15, 2021: http://web.archive.org/web/20211215211742/https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/facts.html
"Both mRNA and viral vector COVID-19 vaccines deliver instructions (genetic material) to our cells to start building protection against the virus that causes COVID-19. However, the material never enters the nucleus of the cell, which is where our DNA is kept.”
It was replaced with updated information by the time of the web archive’s first capture on December 16: http://web.archive.org/web/20211216071850/https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/facts.html
"Both messenger RNA (mRNA) and viral vector COVID-19 vaccines work by delivering instructions (genetic material) to our cells to start building protection against the virus that causes COVID-19.
After the body produces an immune response, it discards all the vaccine ingredients just as it would discard any information that cells no longer need. This process is a part of normal body functioning.
The genetic material delivered by mRNA vaccines never enters the nucleus of your cells, which is where your DNA is kept. Viral vector COVID-19 vaccines deliver genetic material to the cell nucleus to allow our cells to build protection against COVID-19. However, the vector virus does not have the machinery needed to integrate its genetic material into our DNA, so it cannot alter our DNA.”
In short, millions of people who received the J&J shot prior to December 16, 2021 did so with the publicly issued assurance from the CDC that no genetic material would enter the nuclei of their cells. This was scientifically known to be false the entire time.
Misinforming the general population about nuclear penetration for 8 months is about as awful a violation of informed consent as can be imagined. One can hardly imagine a more invasive drug mechanism about which to falsely proselytize the public.
Furthermore, some readers may remember that December 16, 2021 was a very fateful day in the saga of the viral vector vaccines. December 16, 2021 was precisely the day that the CDC issued its official panel recommendation of preference for mRNA vaccines over J&J, effectively ending Johnson & Johnson’s vaccination campaign in America.
“CDC recommends Pfizer, Moderna vaccines over J&J shots for adults due to rare blood clot cases” https://www.cnbc.com/2021/12/16/cdc-panel-prefers-pfizer-moderna-vaccines-over-jj-due-to-rare-blood-clot-cases.html
“CDC recommends people not get J&J vaccine if Pfizer, Moderna are available” https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/cdc-panel-recommends-people-not-get-jj-vaccine-pfizer-moderna-availabl-rcna8987
That’s right. The CDC only bothered to correct the brazen falsehood in the exact 24 hour period in which it became too late to matter. In other words, they revealed the truth about the mechanism only at the exact time they decided to stop promoting the vaccine.
With millions of Americans relying on the CDC to be a sound source of scientific information, it appears that the same government organization that colluded with Big Tech to censor Americans for “misinformation” (https://ftp.aflegal.org/foia/HHS/COVID%20Disinformation%20-%20CDC%20-%2021-01575-FOIA/286%20pages_Second%20Interim%20Release_22-00003-LT.pdf) is quite plausibly its largest purveyor.
I’m not a lawyer, and I can’t say whether a lawsuit will come of this. However, I can say that if there ever is one, it could potentially bring somewhere in the ballpark of 10 million5 plaintiffs along with it.
I have my doubts that dismissing them as “anti-vaxxers” is going to settle it.
As concerns the mRNA vaccines, it’s worth mentioning that claims that the prospect of nuclear penetration can be dismissed out of hand, still propounded on the CDC’s website as well as mainstream institutions virtually across the board, may well be in serious jeopardy, as evinced by “Intracellular Reverse Transcription of Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine BNT162b2 In Vitro in Human Liver Cell Line” (https://www.mdpi.com/1467-3045/44/3/73/htm), which robustly demonstrated transcription of Pfizer mRNA to DNA in liver cells in vitro. Notions inferable from the study, like acute vulnerability during cell division, were well-anticipated by a number of researchers, including Sousa et al. (https://biomedres.us/pdfs/BJSTR.MS.ID.005501.pdf [Author’s note: apologies that this version appears in some places to be an imperfect translation]) who pointed out, among other possible means of penetration, that the nuclear membrane disappears entirely during a phase of mitosis. Unfortunately, the notion of the nuclear membrane as a regularly stable, let alone impenetrable barrier was always absurd on its face, belied by elementary biology. Given the disturbing results of the Swedish study, genotoxicity looks more plausible than ever.
Much has been made, in the communities where discussion was allowed, about the troubling history of the mRNA vaccines, and with good reason. The pharmaceutical industrial complex tried to whitewash the lack of long-term testing of these drugs by selling the public on the idea that the decades during which the products were routinely too dangerous to test on humans (Fortune Magazine in 2015; “[Moderna] still does not have a single drug candidate in human clinical trials” https://fortune.com/2015/01/08/the-3-billion-startup-that-wants-to-help-you-to-make-medicines-in-your-own-cells/) made them “well-researched”, thereby taking the time period during which the drugs were too dangerous for long-term testing and absurdly using it as a promotive substitute for it. This was just about the most profoundly unscientific spin imaginable.
However, less known even to those who did frequent communities where discussion was allowed was that the history of the adenoviral vectors had been similarly harrowing. For example, the following is from an urgent letter written in October of 2020 by some of the scientists behind the viral vector’s earlier STEP trials in the Lancet:
“We are writing to express concern about the use of a recombinant adenovirus type-5 (Ad5) vector for a COVID-19 phase 1 vaccine study,1 and subsequent advanced trials. Over a decade ago, we completed the Step and Phambili phase 2b studies that evaluated an Ad5 vectored HIV-1 vaccine administered in three immunisations for efficacy against HIV-1 acquisition.2, 3 Both international studies found an increased risk of HIV-1 acquisition among vaccinated men.” https://www.thelancet.com/article/S0140-6736(20)32156-5/fulltext
Of note is that the YouTube video included in GAVI’s presentation,
in contrast with the article’s text (https://www.gavi.org/vaccineswork/what-are-viral-vector-based-vaccines-and-how-could-they-be-used-against-covid-19), opts not to explicitly state that genetic material is inserted into the nucleus of the cell, and in fact in its visual representation simply shows contact with an ambiguous membrane that casual viewers will almost certainly mistakenly interpret as the outside of the cell. GAVI, like the CDC, sometimes appears to view its ultimate mission as stomping out vaccine hesitancy at all costs, apparently even if it has to use potentially misleading graphical representations to do it. However, despite being a largely unaccountable international organization beholden to no national citizenry, it still managed not to stoop as low as denying in (potentially litigable) text that nuclear penetration is a necessary feature of this mechanism, and not at all a bug.
But our CDC most certainly did.
Americans would not have been wrong to be uncomfortable about this prospect. In fact, Ad vectors aside, in a world where so little is understood about epigenetic phenomena (readers are advised to see the references in footnote 2, and to consider that, for just one particularity, a substantial portion of our genome consists of “mysterious” transposable elements https://www.nature.com/scitable/topicpage/transposons-or-jumping-genes-not-junk-dna-1211/), Americans may have been far too naively trusting of many of the establishment’s empirically unsubstantiated blanket assurances for the mRNA vaccines as well. As concerns the adenoviral vectors, earlier research had shown both long-term persistence (https://ashpublications.org/blood/article/110/6/1916/24190/Adenoviral-vectors-persist-in-vivo-and-maintain?fbclid=IwAR2eJfPZetWR_es2ZFeHO8-Ys2_Bq7tXRnzZwODajk-QMJwvZENHi0rrItA) and low rates of integration (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12109211/) in previous applications. Without long-term data, nothing could be dismissed with certainty. Wariness of nuclear penetration was always warranted.
Given the availability the adenoviral vector, the routine lack of rigor and conflation on the topic of nuclear penetration was bad enough when it was summarily dismissed by local medical institutions; e.g.
but fish rots from the head down, and the worst perpetrator was always the CDC, which promulgated the falsehood even when mentioning the viral vectors by name.
Based on 17,272,47 doses administered by December 16, 2021 minus earlier figure of 7,517,671 doses having been administered by April 15, 2021.
